ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All visitors entering Tanzania are required to have a valid passport and Visa. Visas can be obtained from the Tanzania Diplomatic Mission Abroad or alternatively at the point of entry. Visa's cost for UK passport holders is $50 on arrival, other nationalities should check with the Tanzanian embassy.

For Kenya UK passport holders can obtain a Transit visa which is valid for a single entry up to a maximum stay of 6 nights/7 days, the cost is £15. If staying longer a Single Entry visa is valid for stays up to 3 months, costing £35. Both visas can be gained at point of entry or before departure from the Kenyan High Commission (Tele No:0207 636 2371/5).Those with non-UK passport shoud check with the Kenyan Embassy.

If during your stay in Kenya you embark on a safari which includes visiting Tanzania, you will not require a re-entry visa.

This is especially important in Tanzania, and her neighbouring Kenya, as there is such a wide choice of activities both above and below the water.

GENERAL TRAVEL INFORMATION

MAP OF EAST AFRICAClimate - Kenya & Tanzania experiences ideal holiday weather for most of the year, with the exception of April, May and June which are seasonally subject to the long rains. Short rains can occur in November, but, do not last long. The heat of summer is seasonally often cooled by windy conditions, resulting in pleasant sea breezes, particularly on the North and east coasts. Being near to the equator, the islands are warm all year round, but officially, summer and winter peak in December and June respectively.

Best Times to Visit are July through October; December through March. The best months to see manta rays are from December to February.

Health and Safety - Certificates of inoculation against yellow fever and cholera are required only from visitors arriving from countries where these diseases are endemic. Malaria is a common illness in Kenya and as a precaution anti-malarial prophylactics should be taken. Mosquito nets are provided in almost all hotel rooms. For headaches, colds and similar body ailments medication can be bought from anywhere within the country. When travelling to remote areas medication must be carried. To prevent a sunstroke spoiling a trekking expedition or beach fun have a sunscreen lotion and protective headgear handy. Protective clothing and footwear is also important.

Money, Currency and Exchange - The local currency is called Shillingi. Notes are in the denomination of 200, 500,1000,5000 and 10,000, shillings. Coins are order of 5, 10,20,50,100,200. Money can only be changed in the banks, bureaus and hotels . Exchange rate varies from place to place and according to the time. Only few areas accept credit cards and traveler cheques.

Religion - Large proportion of residents are Islamic and that is reflected in all their lives. Photographing of the mosque interior from the doorway is not allowed during prayers. During "Ramadan" the holy month (dates change) Muslims are fasting from morning to evening and you may find it difficult to find food during the daylight hours. However, some specified restaurants are allowed to serve the tourists. Get the advice from the Commission for Tourism. You are requested not to eat, drink or smoke in the public and day time during this month.

Water temperature - The water temperature is generally around 27oC and is constant to depths exceeding sport-diving limits.A 3mm wetsuit should be sufficient. While most diving is from boats, there are also some exciting shore dives

Behaviour - All visitors advised to observe the following:

  • Swim suits and skimpy dresses are restricted to hotels and resort premises.
  • Taking alcohol in the public may offend the residents.
  • Nudity is not acceptable in public places including beach.
  • Kissing in public or display of affection is not customary.
  • Taking photographs of residents without asking their permission is considered offensive.
